Language

The Ĩyãħé Nakoda language, the mother tongue of the people, is still primarily spoken in the homes and throughout the Mĩnĩ θnĩ Wa-pta, Kiska Wa-ptadn, and Ga-hna communities.

The majority of the Ĩyãħé Nakoda population is bilingual, with English as a second language.

However, in recent years Ĩyãħé Nakoda Elders and Traditionalists have agreed that the authentic Ĩyãħé Nakoda language is becoming diluted with an increased inclusion of English words. It is also being misused by speaking words in the wrong order, and by using incorrect words or phrases.

The Rocky Mountain Nakoda website has been specifically developed as a means to preserve and maintain the accurate Ĩyãħé Nakoda language and its use, both oral and written.

This important website is intended to be the standard and key resource for correct application of the distinct Ĩyãħé Nakoda language.
